Mosca × Pérez Scremini

03 / 04

2025 · Mosca × Fundación Pérez Scremini, Uruguay

My role
Pattern design. Concept, identity and prototype for the site — self-initiated.
Papel de la Ilusión. Self-initiated; it stopped at budget.

Problem

Fundación Pérez Scremini treats childhood and adolescent cancer in Uruguay. For the holidays they launched a gift wrap sold at Mosca, with proceeds going to the academic development of children in the programme. More than 30 children and teenagers each drew something that mattered to them about Christmas. The brief was to turn those drawings into a single pattern.

Constraint

Thirty-odd separate artworks had to become one continuous surface without any of them losing what made it itself. And every drawing had to carry its author's name — visible and legible at the scale of a sheet of wrapping paper.

Decisions

I kept the names. Each drawing sits beside the first name of whoever made it. It was the most restrictive decision in the whole composition and the one I'd defend first: the pattern is theirs.

I composed for two states. Wrapping paper is seen flat on a shelf and curved in a hand. The density had to hold at both distances, so no drawing depends on its neighbours to be understood.

I designed a site nobody asked for. The wrap disappears in January. I named the project Papel de la Ilusión, drew a wordmark, built the information architecture and prototyped it in a day, so the drawings would outlive the paper and the kids and their families could find them online whenever they wanted.

What I learned

The site stopped at budget and I still think it needed to exist. Believing an idea is good doesn't make it approved, but it does make it worth building far enough that somebody else can see it.
